Fairfield House gets Down with the Donkeys!

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

Recently the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth kindly visited Fairfield House bringing with them some cuddly friends.  Residents enjoyed a relaxing time petting and stroking the Donkeys.

Donkeys are known for their therapeutic qualities and provide a source of stimulation to residents, including people with dementia.

There is well documented research that spending time with animals has a calming influence – not to mention the enjoyment the donkeys get!

Have a Chatter with Knit and Knatter

Monday, March 24th, 2014

Knit and Knatter is Fairfield House’s very popular knitting club whose eldest member is 105!

Knitting is very therapeutic to the elderly, providing something to aim towards completing, whilst keeping the hands and the mind active. We have found ladies suffering with dementia who say they can’t remember how to knit have just picked up some knitting and automatically carried on doing it without any instruction or guidance.

Our knitting club began back in 2012 when a resident called Enid joined us who was an avid knitter.  We are always keen to encourage and support residents with their hobbies and try to ensure that they maintain links with the local community.

Enid decided that with her love for making soft toys she would like to knit some Christmas tree decorations, so our administrator Carol Moran, joined in and between the two of them knitted many tree decorations.

We decided to enter a Christmas Tree into the local Bridport Christmas Tree Festival using the theme ‘we wish you a wonderful woolly Christmas’ and this became the start of the knitting club.

Each week we meet to discuss and share patterns, projects and ideas – often over a glass of sherry!

The club is now so popular we now have a craft stall in the reception of our home and all proceeds  go into the Resident’s Amenities Fund, allowing residents to choose what they would like to spend the funds on, whether it be an extraordinary outing or a meal out in a restaurant.

Last year we exhibited at the Melplash Agricultural Show which was a great – one lady from Weymouth who purchased some dishcloths at the show even telephoned a few months later saying that they were the best dishcloths she had ever found.

We welcome anyone in Lyme Regis and the surrounding area who would like to come along to our knitting club, please just ring us on 01297 443513 to establish the forthcoming dates.

Currently we are hoping to find a local spinner who is able to come in and give us a demonstration, if you are that local spinner you will receive the very warm welcome at Fairfield House.
