What is Dementia?

The term dementia is the name given to a variety of symptoms that can include memory loss, difficulty in accomplishing everyday tasks or problem solving among others.

Dementia is not a natural part of ageing contrary to what many people think, it is essentially a disease of the brain.

People with dementia may start to act or behave differently leaving loved ones and friends unsure of how to act.

What causes dementia?

The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease but dementia symptoms can also be caused by other things such as having a stroke.

What are the symptoms of dementia?

With dementia everyone’s symptoms are different. How others react to people with dementia has a big role in how the person with dementia feels. For example being patient and calm around someone with dementia is very important for that persons well being.

Often the most prevalent and well known symptom of dementia is memory loss.

However the following symptoms are also common

  • Difficulty performing simple everyday tasks such as making a cup of tea
  • A person with dementia may not recognise their reflection
  • It can be harder to find the right word for something
  • Difficulty making a decision or solving a problem

This can also result in a change of character, a person with dementia may seem withdrawn, anxious, scared or angry.

Physical symptoms can include muscle weakness, weight loss and changes in appetite.

How can I help?

Leading a positive and fulfilling life with dementia is possible, in fact nowadays there are many resources to help you be the best friend / relative or carer to someone you know who has dementia.

Below are some simple tips you can use right away

  • Put the kettle on! Having a drink and chat with someone with dementia will really brighten their day, try and find an old photo album and have a chat about photos of your friend growing up.
  • Keep calm and smile: when people with dementia act in a different way don’t take it personally, the best thing you can do is keep calm and smile and suggest something you can do to take your friends mind off being anxious.
  • Lend a hand – perhaps you can take the bins out, or you could offer to pick up a bit of shopping on the way back from work.

A helping hand can make a big difference for those with dementia.
